Jail Counseling
Counseling is provided in the various jails located in Halifax, Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties upon request by inmates and Sheriff Department staff.
Specially-trained counselors also receive referrals for outpatient services from judges, probation officers, and other offices of the criminal justice system.
Medical Detoxification
Detoxification is the process of medically managing the withdrawal of an individual from alcohol and other drugs in a hospital setting.
The substance abuse staff can implement and coordinate this service for those who have commercial insurance and for individuals who are eligible for Board-sponsored funding.
During the withdrawal process, a substance abuse counselor or therapist maintains contact with the progress of withdrawal.
Residential Treatment
During the course of treatment, the consumer targets abstinence from all addictive substances.
If it becomes apparent that, while he/she is demonstrating motivation to achieve this goal, more intensive support and treatment is needed, inpatient residential services are available, as long as funding permits, through
residential treatment.
Prevention Services
Substance abuse prevention and education activities are available to
residents in Halifax, Brunswick, and Mecklenburg Counties. These activities are
aimed at enhancing the ability of the community to more effectively provide
prevention services in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse.
Violence prevention is also targeted. Services are concentrated on the youth and
adolescents of the community,
with an emphasis on the role of the
family in preventing risk behaviours.
Prevention activities are based on a foundation of interagency
collaboration, coalition building, and community networking. This is achieved
through the efforts of a Prevention Advisory Council in each county, which works
to coordinate services among the local public school system, law enforcement
agencies, county government, and faith community. The Councils are comprised of
representatives from these various service providers.
In the spring of every year, each county’s Advisory Council accepts
proposals for specific prevention activities from various agencies and
organizations. These proposals are reviewed by the Council for recommendation
for funding from Southside Community Services Board. Final approval for all
funding must come from the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and
Substance Abuse Services in Richmond. The Advisory Councils meet quarterly
throughout the year to monitor approved programs.
Some of the programs that have been funded include anger management
workshops, after-school programs, youth leadership training, and fatherhood
initiatives. Several of these programs utilize science based curriculum's
“Life Skills Training” and “Creating
Lasting Family Connections.
