July is National Minority Mental Awareness Month. Help raise awareness about mental health in diverse communities to improve mental health education, treatment, access and research. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that mental illness is more common than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. Asian women over 65 have the highest suicide rate, Hispanics are two times less likely to recieve mental health services than caucasians, and African-Americans are 20% more likely to report having serious psychological distress than caucasians. However, the stigma that comes with mental illness in our society, and the lack of education and awareness, has led to underutilization of treatment and services.
